The film does not let go.
When the glass cracks, the fragments stay bonded to the film. The pane is broken but it is still in the frame, still in the way, and every additional hit has to defeat the glass and the film together. That is the entire point of the install.

A standard install bonds film to the face of the glass only, which leaves the film free to pull out of the frame under sustained impact, taking the glass with it. An anchored install bonds the film to the window frame around the full perimeter, so impact load transfers into the frame and the structure of the building rather than being carried by the adhesive on the glass alone. It is the single largest difference between a film job and a barrier.

Dowsil 995 is a structural silicone, the same class of product used to bond glass in curtain-wall construction. We run it around the perimeter of the opening to make the mechanical connection between the film and the frame. It is what turns the anchored install from a concept into a load path.

The film reaches a working bond within about 24 hours and a full structural cure in three to four weeks. During the cure period you may see slight haze or small water pockets as the mounting solution evaporates through the film. That is normal and it resolves on its own.

Wait 30 days after install, then clean normally with a soft cloth or rubber squeegee and a mild soap solution. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive pads, and scrapers, all of which will damage the film surface. The film is durable, but it is a polymer, not glass.

Interior, in nearly every case. Interior film is sheltered from UV and weather, which is why it carries a lifetime warranty against a 10-year term for exterior installs. Exterior application is reserved for the small number of openings where interior access is not possible.

The glass cracks, because film does not make glass unbreakable. What changes is what happens next: the fragments stay bonded to the film sheet and the sheet stays in the frame. The pane is destroyed but the opening is still closed, and every subsequent hit has to defeat the glass and the film together. Afterwards the pane is replaced and refilmed as normal.
